Assistant Director

Type of Position: Year Round, Part Time
Onsite Residence Required: Mid-June – August (matching summer camp schedule)
Start/Finish Date: February 1st – December 31st, 2026
Compensation: ~$20,000 annually (includes summer contract + part-time year-round work)

Join Canterbury Hills Camp as our Assistant Director, a year-round leadership role combining strategic planning, staff mentorship, and hands-on summer program oversight. You’ll work closely with the Camp Director to shape a values-centered, inclusive, and joyful camp community while gaining experience in youth development, program management, and nonprofit leadership. This position offers $20,000 annually, including summer housing and part-time year round engagement.

  • The Assistant Director receives ongoing mentorship from the Camp Director and will gain hands on experience in:
    • Supervising and coaching seasonal staff
    • Designing and evaluating program models
    • Administrative and operational leadership
    • Strategic planning and long-term visioning
    • Behaviour guidance, conflict resolution, and caregiver communication
    • Marketing, outreach, and community partnerships
    • This role provides valuable leadership experience transferable to careers in education, recreation, social services, ministry, and nonprofit management.

Role & Responsibilities

Program Development & Planning:

  • Ensure that all camp programs operate within organizational policies and procedures
  • Collaborate with the Camp Director on long term strategic planning, program expansion, and facility improvements
  • Maintain alignment with camp mission and values in all programming decisions
  • Assist with pre camp planning and policy updates
  • Update training materials, program models, and registration documents
  • Continuously improve programs based on staff, caregiver, and camper feedback
  • Design new activities or seasonal programs to enhance year-round engagement

Program Delivery:

  • Develop, organize, promote, and oversee program implementation
  • Maintain communication with caregivers and staff; respond to concerns and feedback
  • Ensure inclusive programming for campers with diverse and exceptional needs
  • Foster positive pre camp relationships with campers and staff
  • Oversee behaviour management and ensure safe, fun, high quality experiences
  • Supervise daily operations of the summer camp
  • Plan and execute off season programs such as the two day March Break Camp.
    • Manage program setup within registration software, including advertising, promotion, and handling registrations.

Staffing and Leadership:

  • Foster a culture of inclusivity, collaboration, and success among staff
  • Assist with recruitment, including scheduling interviews, reference checks, and paperwork
  • Plan and implement professional development and connection opportunities for staff
  • Oversee assigned performance evaluations and maintain staff files
  • Engage and supervise volunteers
  • Support staff and volunteers in development, creativity, and teamwork
  • Supervise, mentor, and train Resource Team members
  • Ensure thorough orientation and training for all staff

Marketing and Promotion:

  • Represent and promote Canterbury Hills Camp within the Diocese of Niagara and the broader community
  • Attend job fairs, school visits, church presentations, and conferences
  • Write articles for the Niagara Anglican and collaborate on promotional campaigns
  • Maintain caregiver communication with updates and surveys

Operations and Administrative Management:

  • Review and update risk management protocols
  • Maintain camper and staff records in accordance with legal requirements
  • Assist with oversight of registration, form updates, database maintenance, and inquiries

Resource Team (Multiple Positions)

Type of Position: Seasonal Spring/Summer Leadership Role
Salary: ~$12,000 (includes seasonal contract + off-season hiring assistance)
Start/Finish Date: April 27th – August 30th, 2026

Our RESOURCE TEAM is a group of emerging leaders who support staff, guide campers, strengthen community, and help the camp run

Roles

In order to understand each Resource Team role, please read their individual job descriptions. Here is a brief overview of each role:

Community Connections Coordinator

  • You will be a storyteller and relationship builder for the broader camp community. Through communications, social media, volunteer engagement, alumni relations, and staff culture-building, you help shape how camp experiences are shared and celebrated.

Day Camp Coordinator

  • You are the primary leader responsible for the success, safety, and joy of Day Camp. You support Day Camp Leaders, maintain communication with caregivers, and ensure smooth programming throughout each camp day.

Leadership Development Coordinator

  • You are the primary leader for the LIT 1 and LIT 2 programs, guiding teens through personal growth, community building, skill development, and hands-on leadership opportunities. You also collaborate with Resource Team peers to ensure LITs are well supported throughout camp life.

Program Coordinator

  • You are the creative engine of camp programming. You ensure campers experience imaginative, inclusive, and well equipped activities by supporting Unit Leaders, maintaining program resources, and coordinating camp wide events.
