Board of directors

The Board of Directors for Canterbury Hills Camp is a group of dedicated community members who provide informed oversight for our current operations and long-term strategic direction for the future of the camp.

Many directors are camp alumni who are familiar with our history and culture. Every director on the Board is devoted to ensuring that Canterbury Hills continues to thrive for generations of campers to come.

Our Board is always eager to welcome enthusiastic supporters and alumni looking to stay involved and contribute to our mission in a meaningful way.

Interested in joining our Board of Directors? Here’s what you should know!

What is the time commitment?

Board meetings are held virtually on the evening of the third Wednesday of each month, and most committees also meet virtually on a monthly basis. Committee members who are not on the Board of Directors are not required to attend Board meetings (unless there’s an occasion where a committee-related decision is being discussed).

You do not need to serve on the Board to join a committee; both opportunities offer meaningful ways to share your expertise, enthusiasm, and lived experience as a Canterbury Hills alumni or supporter.

In-person commitments are minimal and typically take place on evenings or weekends, to accommodate most board members’ work schedules. We invite Board members to participate in four main events throughout the year:

  • Camp Staff Hiring (March break)
  • Open House (May long weekend)
  • Camp Work Day (May or June)
  • Commissioning Service (late June or early July)

While participation in the above is strongly encouraged, it is not mandatory for Board members to attend every in-person event.  Prospective Board members should aim to attend as many events as possible, with emphasis on the Camp Staff Hiring and the Commissioning Service.

What do our Board Committees do?

Our board committees drive key strategic initiatives across four core areas: enriching camp programming, maintaining our grounds and facilities, expanding fundraising efforts, and stewarding human resources practices.

Each committee plays a vital role in our long-term sustainability, and we particularly welcome alumni whose professional expertise or lived experience aligns with these focus areas.

Camp Program Committee

Supports the Camp Director in evaluating program offerings, setting registration fees, and planning seasonal staffing. Members play a hands-on role during recruitment by participating in staff interview days across January, February, and March.

Property Committee

Provides guidance and strategic oversight to our Property Manager. Members assess ongoing site and facility needs, help coordinate our annual Work Day, and consult with contractors on capital improvement projects.

Fundraising and Alumni Committee

Oversees fund development, community outreach, and alumni engagement. In addition to regular meetings, members collaborate closely with our year-round staff to research, plan, and execute fundraising initiatives.

Human Resources Committee:

Ensures camp governance and employment practices adhere to legal, safety, and organizational standards. Responsibilities include reviewing employment offers, refining HR policies, and advising leadership on personnel matters.

Becoming a Board Director or Committee Member

Who should join the Board?

While a passion and love for Canterbury Hills is the only true prerequisite for Board or committee membership, alumni whose professional experience or specialized knowledge can strengthen our governance, support our operations, and enhance the impact of our programs is especially helpful.

Steps to join the Board of Directors (or one of our committees):

If you are interested in serving on the Board of Directors for Canterbury Hills Camp, we invite you to connect directly with our Board Chair (board@canterburyhills.ca) to explore current opportunities and discuss expectations in more detail.

Prospective directors are formally elected at our Annual General Meeting (AGM) in October. Those interested are welcome to attend regular board meetings as non-voting observers to learn more about our governance, community, and ongoing initiatives before formal election.

Become a Member of Canterbury Hills Camp

Becoming a voting member is a meaningful way to help shape the future and governance of our camp, without the time commitment of joining our Board of Directors. This role is ideal for dedicated alumni, camp families, donors, and community advocates who care deeply about our mission and want a direct voice in our long-term direction.

Much like shareholders in a community-driven organization, members hold key governance responsibilities. These include attending our Annual General Meeting (AGM), voting on the Board of Directors, approving bylaws, and guiding major organizational decisions.

The 2026 Annual General Meeting will take place on virtually Wednesday, October 21st at 7:00pm.

Our Camp Board will share an overview of Canterbury Hills’ operations, reflect on the past fiscal year (2025), and look ahead to the future of our camp community. To attend as a voting member, you must submit a membership application by 12:00 p.m. on October 20 and pay the $20 membership fee.

To request an application form or learn more, please email our Board Chair at board@canterburyhills.ca.
