About Our Staff

Camp is a place of joy, adventure, and belonging. It’s where memories are made, new challenges are embraced, and personal growth thrives. Our dedicated staff foster a culture of acceptance and support, empowering campers to be themselves, reach new heights, and achieve more than they ever imagined. With leaders who genuinely care and believe in them, campers are encouraged to take on fresh challenges with confidence.

Every camper is unique, and our staff take the time to understand and nurture each individual’s hopes, needs, and dreams. This personalized approach requires teamwork, patience, active listening, and creativity. While some moments are filled with joy and wonder, others may present challenges that foster growth. Through it all, our leaders maintain a positive, energetic, and dedicated presence. The camp staff are heroes, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of the children they serve.

Our Summer Camp team is composed of an experienced Camp Director, Assistant Director and Resource Team, as well as Camp Leaders (Overnight, Bridge, and Day), Lifeguards, and Kitchen & Facilities Staff. Each member of our team is carefully selected for their qualifications, experience working with youth, passion for the outdoors, and their exceptional leadership, responsibility, and creativity. While not a requirement, many of our staff members were once campers themselves and have completed our Leader-In-Training program which allows them to perform their job with empathy and passion, having once been in the shoes of their campers. All camp staff are outstanding role models who embody the core values we strive to instill in our campers: community, friendship, trust, love, and environmental stewardship.

In addition to our summer team, our Year-Round staff—including the Camp Director, Assistant Director, Administrative Assistant, and Property Manager—work to keep the camp running throughout the non-summer months. They focus on camp operations during the off-season and invest significant time in planning for the upcoming summer, ensuring that each camp season is better than the last.

Here’s what alumni have to say about working at Canterbury Hills…

“Canterbury Hills is an experience that will keep me coming back as many times as I can. Spending your summer running around outside, guiding the children of the next generation, and doing something that matters has no parallel for me. Canterbury further separates itself from any other job experience by offering a safe, loving, and open community to flex your strengths and learn new things.”

“The highlight for me is growing alongside a massively diverse staff team, from the first night we spend together at training to the very last day when we embrace each other with tears rolling down our eyes, crying to songs that weren’t meant for crying. The bonds you form with your staff partners is the closest you can get to family.”

“My absolute favourite thing about working at camp is the relationships you make! Between staff and campers, you make so many close bonds and relationships that it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Working at camp will forever be my favourite thing to do in the summer. Camp truly feels like home.”

“Camp is probably one of my most favourite places ever. From day camp to o overnight, I have so many fond memories of jumping up at campfire, to sing Princess Pat or Riptide, dressing up as silly characters (like Farquadd) during skits, helping run a big game of camouflage during station EPs, and countless campout nights looking up at the stars as we reflected on our amazing day at camp that being a leader at Canterbury is one of the best jobs I’ve ever had.”

“Canterbury Hills has shaped me into the person I am proud to be today. What makes it so special is that the staff team is united by shared values and interests, which creates an intentional community space where you can connect with peers and campers in a very meaningful way. Camp is a place where being silly is celebrated and what seems impossible can become possible with creativity and a shared commitment to the community values.”

“Working at Canterbury allowed me to develop patience, understanding, professionalism, dependability, and responsibility. Above all, I learned how to share a good laugh and have a more glass-half-full outlook on life.”

“Being on staff at Canterbury Hills is the hardest work I’ve ever done – and yet somehow it doesn’t feel like work because I’m having so much fun while doing it and my coworkers become fast friends. It has been the most rewarding experience of my life. I’ve gained not only lasting memories, but skills that have helped me transition into adulthood such as time management, flexibility, patience, creative problem solving and teamwork.”

“Working at camp isn’t for everyone- and that what makes it so special. The like-minded people that Canterbury attracts is the reason why I kept on coming back. I’ve never related so strongly to peers before, and my closest friends come from working at camp. As well, the experience I gained working with kids made me realize that I want to pursue the field of education.”
