Ticks

At Canterbury Hills Camp, tick safety is practiced in the following ways:

  1. PRECAUTIONS: Before participating in activities with increased chances of encountering a tick (eg. long grass): 1) campers are advised to wear light-coloured clothing (making ticks easier to spot), long pants, socks and closed toe shoes; and 2) use an insect repellent containing DEET or lcaridin.
  2. CHECKS: After participating in activities with increased chances of encountering a tick (eg. long grass), campers are asked to perform a "tick check" with a partner. This includes checking folds in clothing and bends in legs/arms, plus asking the partner to check from behind. Tick checks are also encouraged whenever clothing is changed.
  3. TRAINING: Our senior staff who supervise our Wellness Centre are all trained in tick identification, awareness and removal.
